DO YOU HAVE A WEEKLY DANCE?
Yes! We hold dances and lessons every Thursday night. Lessons are from 8-9pm, and social dances start at 9pm and last until 11 or 11:30pm. We do not hold dances on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, or New Years Day. For more specific dates, visit the events page or find us on FaceBook.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Our normal weekly dances are $10. If you are an FWSDS member or affiliate, the cost of admission is reduced to $5. This covers both the drop-in beginner lesson at 8pm, and the following social dance. We charge $12 for our Progressive Series classes ($10 for members), which includes the lesson and dance.
Some nights, we host live bands! The cost for our lesson and then social dance with live music on these weeks is $15 for nonmembers, and $12 for members and affiliates. You can find out which weeks these are on our Events page.
DO I NEED TO BRING A PARTNER?
No. In fact, we encourage dancing with different people to improve your dancing skills. We work to create a welcoming community that encourages people from differing genders, backgrounds, and abilities to dance with one another. We encourage follows to ask leads to dance, leads to ask follows to dance, beginners to ask instructors and experienced dancers to dance, and vise versa. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to dance!
WHAT DO I WEAR?
We recommend comfortable shoes with smooth rubber soles or dance shoes with sueded soles. Flip flops, open toe shoes, strappy heels, and shoes with good grip are discouraged due to possible injury to your feet or knees (or to other dancers).
The type of dress at our dances ranges from jeans and t-shirts to full vintage attire. Clothing that allows you to feel comfortable and move with ease remains the top priority. Swing dancing can be very active, and it is common for both leads and follows to bring an extra clean and dry shirt to change into as a courtesy to dance partners. We do request that when wearing a skirt, undershorts (such as Spanx or Soffe shorts) be worn underneath, as we are a family venue. As a general rule of thumb, a greater number of people will dress up for special dances with a live band than for our weekly DJed dances.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU PLAY?
Our DJs play a variety of swing tunes ranging from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s through today. We focus on playing music authentic to the swing era with tempos friendly to all dance levels.
WHAT IS GOOD DANCE ETIQUETTE?
We're so glad you asked! Be aware of the other dancers around you on the floor. If you try to execute a move and mule kick another dancer in the knee, apologize. Accidents do happen, but we can do our best to keep them to a minimum. Also, as we dance, it is always wise to be mindful of your surroundings, and leave a healthy amount of space as a buffer zone. When asked to dance, if you decide to decline someone's request, it is generally unacceptable to begin a dance to the same song with another partner unless that dance had been previously agreed upon.
A NOTE TO BEGINNERS
Do not become discouraged by dancers that may seem more experienced than you! Everyone started as a beginner, but continued to grow as a dancer through practice and dedication. Through you, the swing dance community continues to grow! Social dancing is a great opportunity to make new friends. It all starts with a dance.
